Partial Hospitalization Program for Alcohol Addiction: What It Is and Who Needs It

by | Dec 9, 2022

Addiction can be a challenging and isolating struggle, but it is important to remember that you are not alone. If you are seeking addiction treatment in Louisville, Kentucky, there is hope.

Alcohol addiction affects not only those who drink but also those around them. It devastates the individual along with their family and friends. Left unchecked, alcohol addiction can cost one their family, their financial well-being as well as their health.

The good news is that nowadays, there are a variety of alcohol addiction treatment programs available in rehabs across the country including partial hospitalization programs.

What is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) refers to an intensive form of outpatient care for people struggling with substance abuse. In the continuum of care model, PHP serves as the middle phase between inpatient or residential care and outpatient treatment

It differs from intensive outpatient treatment in the number of hours required. Typically, those in an IOP program are required to attend about 9 hours of treatment weekly while those in PHP attend about 20 hours per week.

When attending a PHP, you don’t have to live at the treatment facility. You have the freedom to live at home or in a sober living community. This makes it easier for you to keep up with school, work, or other responsibilities.

Like other types of alcohol treatment, PHPs use therapy –both individual and group therapy alongside other methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy, to help individuals get better.

Who Needs Partial Hospitalization?

PHPs are ideal for those who need structured and intensive addiction treatment without 24-hour care and supervision. It is often used as a step-down from residential treatment which is more restrictive and allows individuals to transition to living outside the treatment facility.

This treatment program is also suitable for those who are at a high risk of relapse or those who have relapsed before. You’ll get to have the freedom of living outside a treatment facility but with the intensive clinical support, you need to help you avoid and manage triggers and relapse.

Additionally, partial hospitalization programs are ideal for those who have a robust support system at home. This is crucial in helping them avoid relapse as well as motivating them to keep attending treatment sessions weekly.

Those who complete a partial hospitalization program often step down to intensive outpatient treatment and then on to outpatient care before joining an aftercare program.
