What is a Sober Living Home?

Sober living homes are designed to offer a safe and comfortable place for you to call home. Sober homes were first created in the 1970s by individuals in recovery who saw that something was missing for people who go home after completing a rehab program.

Sober living was then developed in an effort to ease the transition from a rehab facility to going home. Little research is available regarding the effectiveness of a sober living home. However, the Alcohol Research Group began conducting their own studies. They found that individuals who went into sober living had improved mental health, employment status, and were able to stay sober.

Sober living houses in Kentucky are, as the name suggests, living facilities without drugs and alcohol. Most sober living homes do not offer treatment services at the house, but expect the individuals living there to be working towards a healthier recovery. Some houses may have expectations about being in an outpatient treatment program or for attending AA or NA meetings.

Houses are typically run by a house manager or someone who has lived at the house long-term. These individuals can be an invaluable source of support because they can relate to the challenges of life after rehab and adjusting to a sober living house. Residents are typically able to stay as long as they need to, as long as they are meeting the expectations of the house.

While insurance companies will help cover the cost of inpatient and outpatient treatment programs, they do not help with sober living costs. Mainly because no treatment is being given, despite the gains that can come from living in a sober house. As a result, paying for a sober house is a barrier that some individuals face with this living option.

Sober living houses are known to have a strict zero-tolerance policy when it comes to drugs and alcohol. Understandably so, considering that they exist to provide a safe living space without substances. If the rules of the house are broken, you are asked to leave. Some houses may allow you to return if you can show that you have made the necessary changes to have a healthy recovery.

If you are considering a sober living house, an important question that you can ask is what their rules and expectations are as well as how they respond to them being broken. Having a structured environment can help give you some dependability in your life after a period of chaos driven by addiction.

Sober living can be an excellent resource for individuals with a shaky home environment that is expected to be challenging in early recovery.

Why Go to Sober Living After Addiction Treatment

Everyone’s addiction looks different, so it is no surprise that everyone’s recovery will be different as well. Inpatient rehab programs typically last 4 to 8 weeks, depending on your needs, the program’s design, and your ability to afford an extended stay. Understandably, some people just need more time out of their home environment in early recovery. Kentucky sober living would give you the opportunity to live in a safe home after you leave rehab.

There are several reasons that someone may not want to return to their home environment after finishing a rehab program. Addiction can leave a trail of disaster behind you and can leave your home life in rough shape.

For some, this may be the state of their relationship with their partner or spouse. It can take time to repair the damage that was done to a relationship during active addiction. It can also take time for your loved ones to learn how to best support you in your recovery. Then there are those who can recognize that their relationship is toxic and would not foster a healthy recovery.

For homes with children, some parents feel as though it is better for the children to not have the addicted parent return home right after finishing rehab. This can be in response to any negative impact that active addiction had on the children or out of concern for potential relapses. Depending on the child’s age, they may not be able to understand the changes that are happening in their home, which may take time to adjust to.

Then there are some individuals who get help for their addiction who have a loved one at home who is struggling with their own addiction. These folks leave rehab knowing that there are drugs or alcohol in the home and that they will be around someone who is struggling with their own addiction. This would be a significant concern for anyone in recovery, let alone someone in the beginning stages of their recovery. Deciding not to return to an environment like this is likely the best decision you could make for your own recovery.

Maybe you live alone and are worried about being lonely in your home. Boredom is known to be a significant trigger for use and can contribute to a relapse. Being aware of characteristics in your home environment that can be triggering can help you see what changes can be made.

These are just some of the reasons that someone may not want to return home after completing a rehab program. It is okay to recognize that you may need more support before returning home. Everyone’s needs in recovery are different. Allowing yourself additional time can truly be a kindness for yourself.

Long-Term Recovery is Possible

The statistics regarding addiction recovery can be saddening. However, statistics only paint part of the picture. If you have relapsed on drugs or alcohol, take time to think about what it was that led to your relapse. Try to think back, because the truth is you relapsed long before you used drugs or alcohol.

Relapses begin when you start slipping on what you know you need to do for your recovery. This could include missing AA or NA meetings, not talking to your sponsor, not eating well, not taking care of your mental health, and not being honest with yourself about triggers around you.

Having a supportive environment with sober support is two things that can help you with your recovery. There will undoubtedly be challenges in early recovery, and knowing who you can rely on is crucial. Sober living in Kentucky can give you both of these factors.
