Introduction to Aftercare For Addiction Treatment

Completing detox and inpatient treatment programs are extraordinary accomplishments for someone who has been struggling with addiction. This is the beginning of your life in recovery, which can feel overwhelming and uncertain. You’ve learned why addiction is considered a disease, and can hopefully see where this was relevant in your life.

Research has shown us that inpatient treatment programs have better outcomes for addiction compared to outpatient treatment for someone in the beginning stages of recovery. This is because inpatient treatment usually involves:
Adjusting to new medications if necessary.
Beginning to figure out life without using.

Outpatient treatment after rehab can be effective for individuals who have stopped using and are able to manage stressors while living at home.

But now what? Inpatient programs can provide you with a safe space to begin your recovery and start doing the work needed to stay healthy and sober. However, those rose-covered glasses may fade when you go home to the same environment you were struggling in.

The Benefits of Aftercare For Addiction Treatment

As mentioned above, when you finish your rehab program, you return home. Hopefully, you were able to identify triggers in your environment that you can work to change when you are back home—for example, being mindful of “people, places, and things .” Being aware of what should be changed and actually doing it is two different things.

The three situations discussed above are common challenges that people face after completing an inpatient treatment program. Knowing that you have a safe place to come and talk about them can be reassuring.

Drug rehab aftercare gives you the opportunity to continue with any specialized treatment that you began or realized you could benefit from while you were in rehab. You are also able to continue with any mental health treatment that you started in rehab.

You will find that similarly to rehab programs, drug addiction aftercare tends to use group therapy as its primary approach. This is because group therapy has been proven to have a more substantial impact on a person’s recovery than individual therapy alone. Group therapy provides you with the opportunity to connect with others on a vulnerable level that may be new and uncomfortable. Chances are, you will feel validated for your thoughts and experiences when you see that others can relate. All of these can help be more comfortable being vulnerable.

An unfortunate reality of recovery is relapsing. Research has shown that individuals who complete an inpatient treatment program have a 50-90% chance of relapsing. While this number is higher than we would like to see, relapsing does not have to be the end of the road for your recovery.

There is something that can be learned from relapses to help you with future challenges. Being able to process your recovery allows you to find that takeaway lesson. This can be done in a group or an individual session. When you relapse while in treatment, you will have the support of professionals who can help guide you back on track.

An additional benefit is that we are able to tweak your treatment to return to relapse prevention strategies and provide additional support that you may need at that time. We are also able to monitor to see if it may be necessary to go to a detox or rehab program. These changes should not feel like a punishment, though feeling as though you are moving backward, can be discouraging.

Self-help groups are often a recommendation given by alcohol and drug aftercare programs. While they are known to be a great source of support, these meetings are run by peers. There are some topics that these groups may not be equipped to help with. For example, someone who has a mood disorder and an addiction would be able to receive support for their addiction, however, support for their mental health struggles may be limited.

Impact Outpatient Program is a one-of-a-kind outpatient drug & alcohol treatment center that offers a path to lasting, sustainable recovery.
