Introduction to Rising Drug Addiction in Kentucky

As the rates of overdoses rise across the country, Kentucky saw a 49% increase in the number of drug overdoses from 2019 to 2020, according to the CDC. Madison County was no exception to the rise in overdose deaths. Madison County had the third most fentanyl-related overdoses for 2020 in the state. It is estimated that over 8,000 people lost their lives due to overdoses in the last six years.

Because of the high prevalence of overdose deaths in our state, Kentucky has brought what is commonly known as the “Good Samaritan Law” into effect. What this means is that if you are with someone who is overdosing and in need of medical attention, you will be protected from prosecution if you call for help. Fear of being arrested is known to have been a factor stopping people from calling 911 for a suspected overdose, so this law was put in place to help save lives.

Narcan, also known as Naloxone, can be used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Narcan is a life-saving measure that is available across Kentucky at various providers. The 2019 Kentucky EMS report noted that EMS provided 13,144 Naloxone doses in 2019. The true amount of Naloxone administered would be higher if it included what was administered by family or friends before EMS arrived. The EMS report noted that 58% of the patients who received Naloxone improved, while 37% had no change in symptoms. Naloxone was EMS’s 7th most administered medication for 2019, while overdose was the 10th top reason for EMS being called.

The 2019 Kentucky EMS report also showed that 6,705 car accidents that year were the result of alcohol or drug use. The most common age range for individuals who were driving impaired was 30-39 years old, followed closely by 20-29-year-olds.

There are currently 74 needle exchange programs running throughout Kentucky. The purpose of these programs is to reduce the risk of infections such as HIV and Hepatitis that can be transferred through unsterile equipment when used intravenously. Millions of dollars have been used to prevent and treat addiction in Kentucky.

What to Look for in an Outpatient Drug Rehab in Richmond, KY

At this time, there are approximately 285 drug treatment facilities within the state of Kentucky. This is excellent news for individuals who are struggling with alcohol and drug use because there is a variety of treatment options available to them.

If you or a loved one are struggling with addiction, thinking about getting help is a great first step. You may be wondering where to start and feel overwhelmed with all the options. This is a normal feeling; this is a change that requires thought and research on your part.

The first thing to consider would be which level of care you should begin looking at. Many individuals need to start with a detox program. This allows you to detox from all substances you are using with medical supervision. Medical supervision is necessary for the withdrawal of some substances, including alcohol and benzodiazepines. Detox programs can vary in length depending on your symptoms and history of use. An ideal detox program would be in drug rehab in Richmond which would then have an inpatient program you could attend afterward.

Inpatient rehab programs in Richmond are a great option for individuals who have completed a detox program and those who are struggling with a severe use disorder. Inpatient treatment programs vary in length, and your insurance may have specific lengths they cover. Individuals who are struggling with both an addiction and a mental health disorder should receive treatment for both. When looking at various inpatient programs, you should be asking questions about their staff’s experience. How long have they been working in the addiction field? Is there diversity among the staff in regard to their working experience? Having a diverse staff means that you get the benefit of their combined experience.

Partial hospitalization programs allow you to stay at your home and come to the rehab center during the day for treatment. Treatment in this program is extended throughout the day to provide a similar level of care that you would get with an inpatient rehab program. Like your inpatient programs, it is important to ask questions about the doctors, nurses, and counselors who will provide treatment. Since you will be living at home with the partial hospitalization programs, you would want to find a rehab center that has a convenient location.

Intensive Outpatient programs can be used as a transition for those who were in an inpatient rehab program and are returning to their environment at home. It is also ideal for those who are struggling with a mild or moderate use disorder. This treatment program usually involves longer group sessions than an outpatient program would. In addition to asking about the providers and having a convenient location, you will want to see if their IOP program can be adjusted to fit your needs or if it’s a one size fits all approach. Having your program tailored to your specific needs would be the best-case scenario.

Outpatient treatment programs consist of group and individual therapy. With these programs, you would live at home and come to the rehab program during the day for treatment. Research has shown that there are significant benefits of having group therapy with addiction treatment. You are able to relate to others’ experiences, have a sense of validation for your common difficulties, and see that you’re not alone. Outpatient treatment programs should offer you more personalization with your treatment plan. Addressing any mental health struggles you have is essential to ensure that you have all the tools for a healthy recovery. Many individuals who have mental health concerns use drugs and alcohol to cope with the symptoms, so if we don’t address both, we are not setting you up for success when you leave our program.

After-care programming is an additional option that many find to be helpful in their first year of recovery. Addiction rehabs near Richmond offer this service to those who successfully complete their outpatient programs. This program is great for individuals who have a solid foundation for their recovery and would like to have the support of group therapy in their first year of recovery.

Family treatment programs are also available at rehab centers near Richmond. These programs are designed to help the family who was impacted by addiction. These programs help identify unhealthy boundaries among family members as well as things like codependency and enabling behaviors that can fuel addiction. Together, families can learn to move forward together in a way that benefits everyone.
