When Should You Have an Intervention?

What is Xanax?

Xanax is a medication that can be prescribed to treat anxiety conditions such as Generalized Anxiety Disorders and Panic Disorder. Xanax can be an effective medication for these mental health conditions when taken as prescribed.

Xanax is considered a Benzodiazepine. Benzodiazepines act as a depressant, which means they work by slowing down our central nervous system. This can lead to a relaxed mood which can alleviate severe anxiety symptoms. Xanax can also lead to impaired mental alertness, impaired coordination, slurred speech, drowsiness, and dizziness.

The number of American adults with a prescription for benzodiazepines has continued to increase in recent years. Reports show that the rate of fatal overdoses from a benzodiazepine, such as Xanax increased from 0.58 per 100,000 individuals to 3.07 per 100,000 from 1996 to 2010.

Xanax addiction treatment is typically recommended for individuals who develop a dependence on Xanax. We invite you to call Impact IOP at (502) 912-1038 to learn how our Xanax rehab in Kentucky can help you today.

Is Xanax Addictive?

The simple answer to this is, yes. Xanax is known to be an addictive substance. It is possible for an individual to take Xanax as prescribed, and not develop an addiction. However, some individuals take this as prescribed and find themselves struggling with an addiction.

There are two main routes to the development of an addiction to Xanax. The first would be that someone is given a prescription for a valid mental health concern and finds themselves physically dependent on it. Others take Xanax recreationally and develop an addiction from there.

Xanax works by influencing the neurotransmitter GABA in our brain. GABA is known to slow down our brain’s ability to communicate throughout our Central Nervous System, making us feel more relaxed. Over time, our brains develop a tolerance that requires more Xanax to be taken to reach the same effect. Tolerance can occur in individuals who abuse Xanax and those who take Xanax as prescribed for a mental health concern.

When a loved one is suffering from an addiction and their life is becoming more and more unbalanced it could be time for an intervention.

What are the Signs of Xanax Abuse?

Similar to other substances, when a person abuses Xanax long-term, it will change the way their brain works. Their bodies have adjusted and they have a new “normal”. This can lead to mood changes and feeling more angry than usual. Xanax abuse can lead to mental confusion, which can contribute to mood changes.

Mental health symptoms that may arise when an individual has an addiction to Xanax are thoughts about hurting themselves and suicide attempts. Individuals may experience short-term memory loss. Other mental health concerns can include delusions and hallucinations.

If someone is abusing prescribed Xanax, they are likely not taking their prescription as they were directed. This could be taking more than they are prescribed, or taking doses closer together. Either way, they will run out of their medication early. This can lead to doctor shopping or purchasing Xanax illegally.

Xanax dependence can lead to individuals experiencing withdrawal symptoms when they stop taking the medication. A person can become physically dependent on Xanax when they have been taking it as prescribed for an extended period.

Xanax Withdrawal

Withdrawal is an additional sign of Xanax abuse. Xanax withdrawal typically begins 6 to 12 hours from the last use and can last from weeks to years, depending on your abuse and medical treatment received.

Symptoms associated with Xanax withdrawal include:

  • Insomnia
  • Nightmares
  • Restlessness
  • Hallucinations
  • Sadness
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Panic attacks
  • Convulsions
  • Paranoia
  • Mania
  • Seizures

Xanax withdrawal is a serious medical condition and should not be done without the supervision of a medical professional. Seizures that occur during Xanax withdrawal can be life-threatening and fatal.

Individuals who are addicted to Xanax will likely have a variety of behavioral changes. This can include conflict within relationships, new problems at work or school, new legal difficulties, and financial difficulties. They will likely have a difficult time maintaining their different responsibilities.

They may have unsuccessful attempts to cut down or stop their use of Xanax. They experience cravings or a strong desire to use Xanax. Individuals may use Xanax in situations that are dangerous to their health.

Xanax Addiction Treatment Programs in Louisville, KY

Xanax treatment is available for those who struggle with addiction. Xanax addiction treatment centers will begin with a supervised detox where medical professionals will monitor the individual. The professionals will be looking for serious withdrawal symptoms, including suicidal thoughts, hallucinations, paranoia, mania, and seizures.

Once the individual has completed the detoxification process, they can then begin engaging in the Xanax rehab program. Rehab programs use a combination of group therapy, individual therapy, psychoeducation, and alternative therapies in their approach.

Research has shown that a holistic approach to treating addiction leads to better treatment outcomes. This means that for individuals struggling with additional mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or PTSD, their likelihood of having a healthy recovery will increase significantly if they receive treatment for their mental health concerns in addition to their addiction.

Many Xanax treatment centers accomplish this by offering specialized treatment programs that can be added to their addiction treatment program. Specialized treatment programs could include group and individual therapy that utilizes different treatment approaches for your mental health concerns.

After completing your Xanax rehab program, you will likely be encouraged to engage in an outpatient addiction treatment program. This can provide you with a continued source of support while you adjust to your recovery at home.

Impact IOP is an outpatient addiction treatment program that serves Mt. Washington, KY, and the surrounding area. After IOP, you can then move on to our Outpatient treatment program that will focus more on finding your way through recovery. You will undoubtedly experience changes in your behaviors, relationships, and emotions. All of which can be triggering.
