What is Telemedicine or Telehealth for Addiction?

Telehealth is the term used to describe using technology for clinical and non-clinical aspects of medical care. For example, telehealth is used to schedule appointments online or view your personal client’s medical record through a client portal. Telemedicine is the term that refers specifically to clinical uses of long technology, such as providing a diagnosis over the phone or a Zoom call.

Today, addiction treatment facilities have started incorporating telehealth into substance use disorder treatment. This provides the ability to receive addiction treatment when in-person treatment may not be accessible. There are various reasons for this, including disabilities, limited travel ability, childcare issues, and numerous others. Telemedicine options provide the opportunity to get help with addiction while maintaining vital life activities such as employment and family obligations.

Impact Outpatient Program is a one-of-a-kind outpatient drug & alcohol treatment center that offers a path to lasting, sustainable recovery.

The Benefits of Virtual Drug Rehab

Virtual drug rehab is an effective and beneficial alternative to traditional in-person treatment models. One of the most common reasons people choose not to seek addiction treatment is that they do not want to leave their family, employment, or home to get the help they need. Other reasons include concerns about paying for care and transportation to and from treatment. Virtual addiction treatment allows many clients to overcome some of the barriers standing in the way of their recovery.

Virtual addiction treatment is highly accessible. Increased accessibility removes treatment barriers for those who live in isolated communities, live far from treatment centers, those who cannot arrange childcare or transportation, or for those with disabilities who cannot access in-person treatment services. Virtual addiction treatment provides the same comprehensive, high-quality care from the safety and comfort of your home. Like in-person therapy, virtual addiction treatment is (typically) covered by insurance. Also, due to the nature of the virtual treatment environment, it is often more affordable than in-person care, making it more accessible to more people.

Virtual rehab is also highly convenient. Virtual treatment requires access to the technology you likely already have in your home. It removes the need to travel to and from face-to-face treatment sessions. Many treatment sessions are provided on flexible schedules, removing the need to “fit” treatment into your schedule.

Another notable benefit of online treatment is privacy. You are not required to leave your home to attend therapy, allowing those concerned about stigma and other similar issues to immerse themselves in treatment from a safe and comfortable setting.

How Telehealth Opioid & Drug Treatment Can Help

Telehealth allows clients to receive access to drug treatment when they cannot do so in person. There are many reasons why people struggle to access services. Common examples include the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, limited travel capability, limited access to services (due to location), or various other reasons. The ability to access opioid and other drug treatment in a virtual setting reduces the need to travel for services and limits the need to congregate in public areas. This reduces the potential exposure to COVID-19 and also increases access to services for those who would otherwise be unable to receive the help they need. Another benefit to telehealth is that it reduces wait times to meet with an addiction treatment provider.

Unfortunately, the ongoing opioid epidemic has increased the need for addiction treatment services. Throughout the nation, there remains a shortage of addiction treatment facilities, and therefore, the wait times to access services are sometimes long. This is especially true in rural communities or locations with a limited number of treatment providers. Using telehealth and virtual addiction treatment allows people to seek treatment from anywhere. It also allows providers to help clients located hundreds, possibly thousands of miles away thus, reducing the need to wait for availability at a local treatment center.

It is important to note that telehealth is not sufficient for acute medical emergencies or for clients in need of urgent medically assisted detox services. In these cases, it is critical to seek treatment from a residential inpatient drug and alcohol treatment facility where trained medical personnel can provide support and guidance throughout the detox and withdrawal process. Once detox and inpatient therapy is complete, telehealth services can be used for ongoing therapy related to addiction treatment and aftercare support. Suppose outpatient services have been recommended to meet your addiction treatment needs. In that case, telehealth services are likely suitable to meet your immediate treatment needs if accessing an in-person treatment program is not possible at this time.

Telehealth uses two common methods to help with ongoing opioid and drug treatment needs: text messaging and computer-based programs, such as Zoom. These two methods help increase the amount of contact time between clients and addiction treatment providers. This is beneficial in helping with ongoing addiction treatment as some of the primary reasons for relapse are isolation and lack of accountability. Text messaging is used to help remind clients of virtual support sessions, and virtual support groups (such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous) and to provide a means of accountability for addiction treatment providers and clients. Text messages can be used to “check in” with clients and provide a means for members to appear in support groups to stay in touch. Virtual communication options such as, Zoom have opened up the virtual addiction treatment world like never before.

Zoom and similar computer-based communication programs allow addiction treatment providers to communicate directly with clients. Through these programs, they can provide computer-based screenings, therapeutic sessions, and various other means of maintaining contact with clients regardless of where the provider and the client might be at any given time. Virtual meetings have also grown in popularity in recent years. As noted above, organizations such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous have begun using virtual meeting software as a way to continue to conduct meetings when travel by transportation is difficult. Outpatient treatment services have also increased their utilization of telehealth and virtual meetings increasing access to ongoing essential addiction treatment. For many clients in the early stages of recovery or for those with a mild addiction, the ability to participate in virtual therapy and virtual support groups is a vital part of relapse prevention.
