Statistics of Professionals and Addiction

Addiction is a chronic disease that affects individuals from all walks of life. This includes the working professionals. This classification of individuals would consist of health care providers, lawyers, business executives, and pilots.

Men and women in these roles are usually working under pressure and are unable to show that at the moment. Professionals must be able to express their emotions throughout the day and avoid bottling them up.

Imagine that you have a shed in the far back corner of your yard. Throughout the year, when you find things out of place or that you don’t want to put back in that moment, you put them in the shed. The shed works with the “out of sight, out of mind” thought. The year goes on, and you continue just to stuff things in the shed.

The day will come when you are no longer able to fit even a nail into the shed. At that point, the shed will be an unorganized, overflowing mess that can look too daunting to even approach.

The same thing can happen with our emotions. If you work in a highly stressful environment and stuff your feelings throughout the day, by the end of the day, you are more likely to be flooded with the emotions and thoughts you tucked away. If this is done daily, you’re soon going to be feeling like the mess of a shed.

The unfortunate truth about drugs and alcohol is that they are effective coping skills. Too good, in fact. Individuals who use them to mask their struggles and emotions often have a hard time using healthier options of coping skills because they will require you to feel and sit with some of the negative emotions. The normative stress that is a part of a Professional’s work makes them more susceptible to struggling with misuse and abuse of alcohol and drugs.

Health care professionals are 10-15 % more likely to develop a drug or alcohol addiction when compared to the general population. Prescription medications such as Xanax are commonly misused among health care professionals. The risk of use is even seen with individuals who are in school. Approximately 1 in 5 medical students abuse prescriptions while pursuing their education.

The Canadian Bar Association reported that they believe 15-24% of lawyers were living with an alcohol abuse disorder. This report also stated that of the lawyers who struggle with an addiction, 95% are struggling with alcohol use.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) published a report in 2014 that looked that the drug and alcohol trends within the aviation industry. The results showed that the use of all drugs, including alcohol, has increased than from previous years. The most commonly abused drug was an over-the-counter antihistamine.

Keep Your Job and Receive Treatment

Individuals who struggle with alcohol and drug abuse may think that their use doesn’t impact their work. Whether this is being tired from drinking the previous night, poor concentration from thinking about your next use, or possibly mood changes are beginning to show at work.

Addiction is a disease that continues to progress if the individual does not receive treatment. For professionals, addiction can come at a higher cost due to their responsibilities at work. We are seeing addiction among various professions, which means that if you are not alone.

Admitting that you’re drinking or drug use is a concern is the first step, followed by telling someone else about it. Things start to feel “real” when we verbalize them to others. By having this happen, the next step would be to look for help.

Depending on what field of work you are in, you may have more resources at your disposal than you are aware of. Talking to your supervisor, HR manager, or Union Rep could provide you with valuable insight.

Professionals may feel shame awkward and have a difficult time asking for help with an addiction, especially if they are in a helping role themselves. These feelings are important and can be addressed in treatment. Being open with your employer may lead to them being more in contact when you return to work, but all employers would rather have you in treatment getting help than struggling at work at making a mistake that hurts yourself or someone else.

The Benefits of an Executive Rehab

As stated above, professionals have higher levels of stress when compared to the general public. Besides that, depending on their profession, they may have compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue, or secondary traumatic stress, is a common mental health concern among health professionals who help individuals with a history of trauma and abuse.

Factors like this are taken into consideration when it comes to treatment for health professionals and lawyers. Having a holistic approach to treatment allows us to address concerns in all aspects of your life. We hope that by doing this, you will be better prepared to begin your recovery journey.

Executive Rehab programs are ideal for individuals whose main barrier to getting treatment for their addiction is their job. These programs are designed to work with these individuals because we understand that their work may not be something they can walk away from to get help.

Being able to continue working while in treatment may actually reduce a Professionals’ level of stress compared to if they had to stop working. Without worrying about work, you are able to stay focused when you are in treatment and get as much out of your time with us as you can.

An additional benefit to being in a treatment program with individuals who are in a similar work environment is seeing that your struggles are shared. Feeling validated regarding your thoughts and feelings can be powerful and help you heal.

Engaging in a treatment program allows you to receive support and encouragement that you may not be getting. Our goal is to help you identify your struggles and help you build your confidence in your ability to cope and manage them.
