What Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Substance Abuse Addiction Treatment

by | Jun 27, 2022

Addiction can be a challenging and isolating struggle, but it is important to remember that you are not alone. If you are seeking addiction treatment in Louisville, Kentucky, there is hope.

Addiction is a disease that needs to be treated the same as any other. Substance abuse is a difficult thing to overcome, as the substance alters the way that your mind perceives things, making sure that the only thing the addict cares about is seeking out their next high. However, when someone chooses to try the road to recovery, there are many different treatment options that therapists use. One of these is cognitive behavioral therapy, and we’re going to be looking at how this works for substance abuse addiction treatment. Keep reading down below if you would like to find out more.

What Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT as it is commonly known, is a type of psychological therapy that has been shown to be effective in treating a range of different illnesses. CBT is based on the idea that a lot of the problems and bad decisions that people make are based on unhelpful or irrational ways of thinking and thought processes. It is also based on the idea that some of these come from learned behavior. The point of CBT is to learn to acknowledge and then learn better ways of coping.

This is done in a range of different ways such as learning to recognize that the distortion in your thinking is causing problems. It may also be important to help the person to understand the thoughts and motivations of others are not always negative or to hurt them and use problem-solving skills to navigate situations a little better.

How Can It Help Substance Abuse Patients?

CBT has been used with varying amounts of success with substance abuse patients. CBT can be extremely helpful to these patients in particular as it makes the person confront their destructive behavior. They will end up understanding that their way of thinking led them to their substance addiction in the first place and was not rational, or helpful to them. When the patient gets to a point where they can change their thought patterns to more constructive and rational ones, they will be able to apply this in their everyday life scenarios.

The change in the thought process makes a huge difference to someone with substance abuse whose only thought for so long has been ‘where can I get my next high?’

Types Of Services Available

We offer a range of outpatient services depending on the needs of the individual. Our substance abuse addiction treatments are there to help anyone who is suffering from substance abuse problems to turn their life around and live the healthiest way possible. Here are some of the options that we can offer you at Louisville Addiction Treatment Center.

Telemedicine

We offer telemedicine sessions to all of our patients so that they can fit their sessions into their day without disruption. We know how important it is for you to be able to stick to your schedule if this is part of your recovery, and we don’t want to disrupt this. Fitting in a phone session with one of our professionals will be beneficial to you, and if things need to be taken further such as if you need a face-to-face appointment that can be arranged.

Intensive Outpatient And Outpatient

A lot of people think that there are massive differences in levels between inpatient and outpatient programs. It’s true that inpatient programs have 24-hour assistance for those in recovery, but they do have to live on-site. Our outpatient programs allow you to stay at home so that you can stay with your family and have them around you while you are recovering.

Our intensive outpatient program focuses on people who are heavily addicted to drugs and alcohol. For those in the intensive outpatient program, we try to allow them to live their normal life as much as possible while still attending therapy between five and seven times per week. Most outpatient programs last longer than inpatient because we offer continuous care, working on getting there at your own pace.

Multiple Pathways Treatment

Multiple pathways treatment is a combination of different types of treatment. This is best suited for those people who need different things for different aspects of their life, and who aren’t getting everything they need from one type of therapy.

If you or someone you love is struggling with addiction, we encourage you to get in touch with us. We want to help while maintaining some kind of regular life for the person with the substance abuse addiction.
