Mental Health Matters: Guidance on Managing Co-Occurring Disorders During Addiction Treatment in Louisville

by | Feb 22, 2023

Addiction can be a challenging and isolating struggle, but it is important to remember that you are not alone. If you are seeking addiction treatment in Louisville, Kentucky, there is hope.

Sometimes, addiction treatment involves treating the addiction itself. This is the case when a person is experiencing addiction to a substance that is extremely addictive, such as opioids. In that case, the person can say that they’re on the road to recovery once they tackle the underlying opioid addiction.

However, some addictions are more complex. This is the case when the addiction overlaps with an underlying disorder, such as mental health issues. At this point, the two factors feed into each other, and both must be dealt with

If they’re not, there’s a higher chance of relapse, since the underlying mental health condition may induce conditions that make recovery more complicated.

Accepting Help

The first step towards recovery is to accept help. It can be challenging to overcome addiction on your own even under the best conditions, but it’s all the more difficult if you’re trying to overcome addiction while also managing a co-occurring disorder.

At Louisville Addiction Treatment Center, we have a solid understanding of mental health issues, addiction, and how they overlap and interact. By reaching out to us, you can have peace of mind that you’ll receive drug treatment or alcohol treatment that has been put together with your mental health condition in mind.

Treating Co-Occurring Disorders

Mental Health: Co-Occurring Disorders & Addiction

There’s no one size fits all recovery approach. Or, at least, there’s not at our treatment center. We offer a range of treatment methods that we can use to treat your addiction, all the while keeping your co-occurring disorder in mind. Some of our treatment methods include:

Intensive Outpatient

If you have a relatively mild addiction, then you may benefit from our intensive outpatient program. As well as giving you the tools and support you need to beat your addiction, we also offer a range of therapies that can assist with the co-occurring disorder – for example, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic treatments.

Telemedicine

It isn’t always possible to receive intensive treatment. Our telemedicine program provides a host of tools that the patient can use to overcome their alcohol and drug addictions, and can also include therapy sessions that provide psychological help even when the patient can’t be there in person.

Multiple Pathways Treatment

In some cases, multiple pathways treatment will be recommended. As the name suggests, this approaches the problem from multiple angles. It could involve prescribing medication, behavioral therapies, and support group access.

There are many different approaches that fall under this treatment. We will work with you to determine the treatment selections that are right for you.

The main takeaway should be that, while addiction and co-occurring disorders can seem complicated, there’s always an approach that can help with the road to recovery.
